If you have a traditonal water heater with a tank, it's time to inspect it if it's over ten years old. I found out the hard way when mine started to leak. That leak was large. Later I found out that if I had called a plumber to inspect the water heater before it leaked, the cost to replace it was alot less (under $1000) than the ultimate water damage. I was lucky that the water heater was in the garage on ground level but alot of homes have their water heater in the attic. When the water heater is in the attic, the water damage is going to be alot more as it will damage attic boards, ceilings, flooring, walls and all of the personal belongings in the water's path.
If your water heater is ten years old or older, time to call your plumber for a free inspection.
