Keep your home safe and secure during the holidays
This is the time of year where homes get broken into for the presents they believe are inside. Don’t let your guard down and forget about home security. Here are four tips that may help protect your home, family and belongings throughout the holiday season, and beyond.
- Keep all windows and doors locked. When many of us may have extra cash around the house and lots of gifts — some of them valuable — burglars are on the lookout for easy targets. Don’t be one of them.
- Keep your home well-lit inside and out and your yard well-groomed. Thieves like darkness and shelter from sight, so light up your yard, sidewalk and garage; trim your bushes and trees, and remove their hiding places. Keep trash in containers or dark garbage bags, especially packaging from big-ticket items.
- Don’t share information on social networks. If you’ll be traveling during the holiday season, don’t advertise it on social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter. If a potential criminal gets wind of the information, it’s easy enough to find out your address. In addition, don’t discuss buying or receiving valuable gifts — again, an invitation to thieves.
- Use a home security system. If you have a home security system use it, especially if you’re traveling; if not, consider purchasing one, if possible. However, if this is not an option, consider these simple steps: install motion sensor, surveillance cameras or solar lights along walkways, porches and driveways; set your interior lights and TVs on timers so they turn on in different parts of the house at different times of the day; ask a trusted neighbor to park in your driveway intermittently and to collect mail and newspapers; notify your local police department or constables department for a vacation watch and request a periodic “drive by.” I recommend upgrading your home security to a satelite based communication system of a landline system because landlines can be cut and disabled. I also prefer satelite GPS systems over internet communication systems because internet routers go down or can be turned off or stolen.
Follow these easy security tips and you may help to ensure that you and your family enjoy a safe, secure and happy holiday. And make sure you have the coverage you want should a break-in occur — call me now. Don’t let a thief ruin your holiday — or any day!
