If you can, move out of the way of traffic or danger and turn on your hazard warning lights. If you have cones, place them nearby to warn other drivers that your vehicle is stationary.
If someone is injured, request medical assistance. If fire is involved, request fire department aid.
Call the police and request all parties stay at the scene until the police arrives. Obtain a copy of the police report.
If you can, use your cell phone or digital picture and take a picture of the scene and all damages including the other party's damages.
Exchange necessary information with the other driver(s). Be sure to write down :
- the other driver's name, address, phone number, email address,
- the other drivers' insurance information such as policy number, carrier name and phone number to claims department.
- the other vehicle's license plate number, year, make, model and color
Write down the contact information (name, phone number, email addresses) of all witnesses.
If your vehicle is not drivable, please contact a towing company to tow your vehicle to a body shop of your choice. Many carriers have a concierge claims service that serves as towing company, body shop and rental car company - all of which can be direct billed to your insurance carrier.
Report your loss to your agent or your carrier.
