Can't wait to go on Spring Break???     Wait!
Here are some important things to do before you leave:

1. Turn off your water supply. The serious water damage claims that come through our office are from policyholders away on vacation or left the home unattended for more than a day. A water leak occurs and fills up the home. Neighbors end up noticing that the water is coming through your front door and windows. That can cause thousands, tens of thousands of damage to your home and personal property inside the home.   Click here if you need to know what to do if you have water damage.

2. Secure your home. Set your alarm. Hold your mail and newspaper and have a trusted patrol or neighbor(s) watch your home.

3. Make your home look like someone is home. Set interior timers to turn on lamps. Have a neighbor park a car in your driveway.

4. Avoid identity theft. Take extra credit cards, social security cards from your purse or wallet in case you loose your wallet. Consider using cash instead of credit card outside of the country because of the rampant credit card fraud in other countries.

5. Pack your health insurance card in case you need medical attention.   Check to see if your vacation spot is covered in your medical network.  Know your deductible beforehand and modify if you need to.  If you are going outside of the country, you may need to purchase travel medical insurance.

6. Pack your auto insurance card in case you drive elsewhere or rent a car or scan it and keep it in your phone.   If you rent a car, your current coverages will usually extend to any rental car unless you are outside the contiguous 48 states or using the vehicle for business use. In most cases you will not need to purchase the coverage the rental car company offers you unless you want coverage for the loss rental income (that is lost revenue by the rental car company if the car is diabled).  If you do not have physical damage coverage on your auto insurance, you will need to purchase the rental car's company coverage to insure the rental car for physical damage.

7. Unplug appliances.

8. Double check doors and windows.

9. Make sure you get worldwide jewelry coverage on your rings, watches and other jewelry you are wearing while on travel. Most policies only insure you for $500 of jewelry on premise so you have to ask for more coverage if you need it.

10. Lastly make sure all of your insurance payments are paid. Automatic payments are the best method to ensure this.

______________________________________

Every ounce of prevention adds up.

Here is a short list of maintenance tips for your home.

  • Have a professional air conditioning contractor inspect and maintain your AC system as recommended by your manufacturer, especially flushing out the ac drains and hoses. These get clogged and can cause alot of water damage in the attic.

  • Have a plumber check your water heater. Water heaters only last about ten years. If yours is older than that, it might be time to replace. Most water heaters are in the attic so leakage could cause extensive water damage.

  • Trim trees back, cut down weak trees or treat sick trees. Hurricane season is about to start in June so we might get strong winds this spring and summer. Right now is a good time to get tree service at an affordable price. If you wait til the demand is higher, prices will be higher too.

  • Get your dryer vent cleaned. Check your clothes washer hoses to be sure they are in good condition as well as clean the clothes dryer exhaust duct, damper and space under the dryer. If you need new washer and dryers the lowest prices for appliances come around Memorial Day sales.

  • Always test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
