Don't just rely on smoke detectors - Get monitored fire security from your alarm company as smoke detectors may not be enough.

Smoke detectors only work if :
  • the batteries are working - so be sure you have a regular schedule to check the batteries
  • you can hear them - so if you are not home or asleep, the smoke detectors will not help save you or your home. For pets at home they cannot be helped by smoke detectors if you cannot hear them.
  • they are placed where they can detect smoke - this requires you to place enough smoke detectors in your home.

I always recommend fire monitoring services from your alarm company in addition to smoke detectors. The service includes placing fire and heat sensors in places most people do not place smoke detectors like attics, garages, outside kitchens, etc. Once a sensor goes off, the fire department is immediately dispatched. Unlike a burglar dispatch, the monitoring company does not delay by calling you first. A fire department is immediately notified. Once you have a fire monitoring service in place by the alarm company have it checked periodically to be sure all of the sensors are working properly and dispatch personnel receives communication from your home.

Fire monitoring services from your alarm company could discount your home insurance by 15%. Discounts vary by carrier.
